Assaying, in chemical analysis, process of determining proportions of metal, particularly precious metal, in ores and metallurgical products. The most important technique, still used today, grew largely out of the experiments of the ancient alchemists and goldsmiths in seeking to find or create precious metals by subjecting base metals and minerals to heat. assaying definition: 1. present participle of assay 2. to perform an examination on a chemical in order to test how pure. The beginnings of fire assaying can be traced to the finds in Troy II (about B.C.) and in the Cappadocian Tablets ( B.C.). These finds prove that very pure silver was made in the twenty-fifth century B.C. From this evidence we must conclude that the cupellation process, and therefore fire assaying, was invented in Asia Minor in the. Bugbee’s book, “A Textbook of Fire Assaying” (2), which is referred to as the bible of fire assaying, defines fire assaying as: “an ancient form of quantitative analysis by which metals are separated and determined in ores and metallurgical products with the aid of heat and dry reagents.” To better understand Bugbee’s definition, a series of pictures which segments a fire assay into approximately .
An assay is an investigative (analytic) procedure in laboratory medicine, pharmacology, environmental biology and molecular biology for qualitatively assessing or quantitatively measuring the presence, amount, or functional activity of a target entity (the analyte). The analyte can be a drug, biochemical substance, or cell in an organism or organic sample.
