Its a wonderful book and one of the best books I have ever read. Though its a huge book, but worth it. It is the type of book which you should read on a regular basis and in then the size won't matter. Its smaller than Harrison but still complete in itself.

Best Books for Medical School Medicine // 10 This is technically a list of my book recommendations for the basic sciences, classically the MS1/MS2 years (my books recommendations for the clinical clerkships are here).

You are right that medicine is just a public service, but it is important that physicians, pre meds, and medical students believe in the profession and the ideals it espouses.

The alternative (and the reality for many, many members of the healthcare profession) is apathy.I read this as an undergrad. Pretty enjoyable and highly academic. I've also had this recommended to me, but I haven't read it.

Also, a former professor of mine has a few (great) books that focus on breakthroughs in the History of Science as well as medicine, so that might be up your alley as well. I am no longer his student, so this couldn't possibly be seen as butt-kissing btw.
